When should you consult a periodontist?

The signs indicating that it is necessary to consult a periodontist include symptoms such as gum bleeding, tooth mobility or migration, tooth loosening, gum abscesses, and periodontal recessions exposing the dental roots.

The treatments offered by Periodontology

Periodontists offer a range of treatments tailored to various periodontal diseases, ranging from non-surgical treatments such as scaling and periodontal assessment to more complex surgical interventions like debridement surgeries, bone or gum grafts, as well as the placement of dental implants. Additionally, certain medical conditions such as diabetes or pregnancy can influence gum health and require a consultation with a periodontist.

Clinical Case: Gummy Smile

The gummy smile occurs when the gums are excessively visible when smiling, often caused by hyperactivity of the upper lip muscles or gum hypertrophy. This can affect the aesthetics of the smile and self-confidence. Fortunately, aesthetic treatments such as cosmetic gum surgery or botulinum toxin injections can be used to correct the gummy smile and improve the appearance of the smile.

Treatment: Gingivectomy

Gingivectomy is a dental surgical procedure aimed at removing a portion of the gum tissue. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia and can be done using a traditional scalpel or a dental laser. It may require post-operative follow-up for optimal healing.
